More meetings and conventions are harnessing the energy and enthusiasm of their groups to give back to the community. By partnering with a local charity you enrich your convention experience. In September 2010, Charlotte hosted the Building Component Manufacturers Conference. The goal was to raise enough money and materials to supply and build a single family home in Charlotte. A rainy start to the construction provided a bonding experience that lasted the length of the conference and beyond. The event is now an annual tradition.
Visit Charlotte can help you make a connection with a local non-profit. Here are some ideas to get your group involved:
Hands On Charlotte – This 20-year-old nonprofit volunteer service organization helps meet the city’s most critical needs. The group supports homeless families, guides at-risk youth, tutors disadvantaged children, feeds the hungry and cares for our environment. They can match your meeting or convention group with a variety of charitable causes.
Classroom Central – Students living in poverty can get school supplies through the Free Store for teachers, which is kept stocked-up through Classroom Central. Meeting organizers and exhibitors can help by donating their extra materials such as pens, pencils, notepads, binders and paper products.
Samaritan’s Feet – With a goal of providing 10 million pairs of shoes for needy children around the world in the next 10 years, this effort needs participation to keep up the pace. Your group can volunteer to help the local chapter with donations and packaging while in town.
Carolina Breast Friends – Team up with this organization to help comfort patients during their time of need. Comfort Bags are filled with items that help newly diagnosed breast cancer patients better cope with chemotherapy. The organization is always looking for donations of supplies for Comfort Bags.
Ritz Carlton Volunteaming – The Ritz partners with the non-denominational Urban Ministry Center on Operation Sandwich. This organization needs 300,000 sandwiches annually to provide more than 800 sandwiches a day to those in need. Participants assemble and package sandwiches to be delivered by the hotel for lunch, either on the same day or on the following day.
Habitat for Humanity – The Building Components Manufacturer Conference partnered with Charlotte’s Habitat for Humanity chapter to fund and build a single-family home during their conference week. Your group can follow suit and see the fruits of their labor come together in just a few days.
